Multilingual Educators Affinity Group

The Coalition for a Multilingual Rhode Island is excited to launch the inaugural Multilingual Educator Affinity Group in Fall 2025. This bimonthly gathering space is for multilingual classroom educators, specialists, paraprofessionals, and community educators. This space is designed to support professional growth, celebrate your unique linguistic and cultural identities, and create a vibrant community of practice!

Our affinity group is made up of educators who identify as multilingual, including but not limited to:

  • Bilingual dual-language educators
  • World language teachers
  • ESOL/ESL teachers
  • Educators who use or support multiple language in any part of
    their work
  • Educators who know more than one language

This inaugural cohort shapes the group’s direction, and lays the foundation for a long term network that centers multilingualism in Rhode Island.

A special thank you to Clyde Cole and Darthula Mathews at Great Schools Partnership for their thought partnership, guidance, time, and energy in helping the Coalition for a Multilingual Rhode Island get this group started and thriving

Multilingual Education Advocacy Workshop Series

Our Multilingual Education Advocacy Workshop Series empowers
Rhode Island parents, students, educators, and community members
with the knowledge and skills they need to champion multilingual
education at the school, district, and state levels. Our six-part workshop series focused on the following 6 key areas:

  1. Understanding Language Programs: What multilingual programs
are and which options exist in Rhode Island
  2. The Rights of Multilingual Learners and Their Families
  3. Conducting a Power Analysis
  4. Advocacy at the School and District Level
  5. Advocacy at the State Level
  6. Defining and Recognizing High-Quality Education Through these workshops, we aim to broaden access to high-quality, culturally responsive training that builds informed, confident advocates across the state.
  7. Our goal is simple: to strengthen advocacy, expand access, and help build a more inclusive, multilingual future for Rhode Island.
